Funding the Future: The Luzerne Foundation Nonprofit Accelerator Helps Nonprofits Reach Their Greatest Potential

Strengthening nonprofit leadership. Accelerating organizational growth. Building stronger communities.

The Luzerne Foundation’s Nonprofit Accelerator is a yearlong capacity-building initiative designed to strengthen nonprofit leadership, organizational effectiveness, and long-term sustainability. Through a unique combination of education, mentorship, professional resources, and financial investment, the program empowers local nonprofits to grow their impact and better serve our communities.

Launched in 2025 through a partnership with The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, the Accelerator grew to include support from AllOne Foundation & Charities and the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening the nonprofit sector across northeastern Pennsylvania.

Growing Impact.

Since its launch, the Nonprofit Accelerator has supported two cohorts of nonprofit leaders through an immersive learning experience focused on impact storytelling, strategic planning, governance, financial management, fundraising, and organizational growth.

The program goes beyond traditional grantmaking, creating meaningful connections among nonprofit leaders, funders, and community partners while providing practical tools and resources to help organizations reach their greatest potential.

Early outcomes demonstrate the power of investing in nonprofit capacity:

  • More than 50 funding requests submitted by participants
  • Over $3 million in additional funding raised
  • 100% of participants reported growth in core leadership competencies in the inaugural cohort
  • Meaningful organizational milestones, including expanded services, strategic partnerships, organizational mergers, and capital improvements.

These accomplishments reflect the dedication of participating nonprofit leaders and the value of investing in the people and organizations driving meaningful change in our region.

More Than a Grant: An Investment in Growth

Selected organizations participate in a comprehensive learning experience designed to build leadership confidence, strengthen organizational capacity, and expand funding opportunities.

Program benefits include:

  • Eight interactive educational sessions featuring experienced professionals, local experts, and nonprofit leaders.
  • Individualized coaching, professional consultations, and peer learning opportunities.
  • Training in impact storytelling, strategic planning, governance, financial management, and fundraising.
  • Opportunities to connect directly with regional and national funders.
  • Professional memberships, continuing education opportunities, and marketing resources.
  • A $50,000 operating grant through a Fund established at The Luzerne Foundation upon successful program completion.
  • Eligibility for up to 40 Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) continuing education points in Category 1.B โ€“ Education for initial certification and/or recertification.*

At its heart, The Luzerne Foundationโ€™s Accelerator is about building lasting relationships, strengthening nonprofit leadership, and helping organizations turn their vision for growth into measurable community impact.

Looking Ahead: The 2027 Nonprofit Accelerator

Building on the success of its first two cohorts, The Luzerne Foundation is excited to continue the Nonprofit Accelerator in 2027 with the support of The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Moses Taylor Foundation, and the Pasco L. Schiavo Memorial Charitable Fund.

Together, these funding partners are helping expand opportunities for nonprofit leaders to strengthen their organizations and increase their impact throughout Luzerne County, Hazleton & Weatherly.

In 2027, The Luzerne Foundation will also introduce Nonprofit Lunch & Learn sessions, creating additional opportunities for local nonprofit professionals to connect, learn, and grow beyond the yearlong Accelerator cohort.
